So today I got home after a crazy week of work and find I have a parcel waiting for me... my brand new Kindle 2 :)

Seriously, a few months ago I laughed at anyone who thought about buying an e-reader... but then I saw how cool Kindle was and I knew I had to have one. I spend a lot of money on books (and if I'm honest I spend a fair bit on overdue library fees too) so I think the purchase of a kindle will pay off in the long run.

No signal!

Weee! Signal!

Anyway, for the most part I found I just switched my new toy on and it was good to go, however for some reason it wasn't picking up a wireless signal. Every time I tried to register it it cam up with this message "Kindle cannot connect at this time. Please try again later".

I did the usual tech support stuff (switched it off and on again etc...) and found it didn't help. I did a few google searches, and after about half an hour of searching I found a solution.

Apparently the Kindle doesn't like switching to networks outside of the US (typical American (j/k!)).... so what I needed to do was this:

  1. Go to the settings screen
  2. Type 311
  3. This will bring up the Network Selector... it'll take a few minutes, but it scans for all the available networks and gives you a list to choose from. If you don't want to be tied to one particular network you can choose "Select Automatically" and it will just change on its own accord when you're out and about.

Easy as! Straight away I had three bars showing (better connection than my iPhone!)

So there you are, hopefully someone else like me will have the same problem in the future and stumble across this page faster than what it took for me to find the answer on some random forum!

Is that the free forever unlimited connection that it has in the US? I wouldn't have thought it would work here - pretty cool :)

We'll have to arrange a visit some time :) just don't tell my poor sad books who are imprisioned in a cold garage...
